"It worked in Blazing Saddles."*

My name is Elizabeth and I'm taking my second semester at ASU as a History major.

I have been interested in history since I was little, mostly due to my mother's job.  I figured out I wanted to take History as a major my senior year of high school thanks to my civics and economics teacher.  He allowed me to teach his classes for a day as the practical for my Senior Project, and I realized how many people don't know what an impact history has on us, whether we're talking about how we got to the political climate we are in right now, or why we have weekends.

My interest is mainly in civil rights; I was raised involved in the labor unions and, due to that involvement, have seen how important it is not only to know your rights but also to really understand how we got them and at what costs.  Safety standards were implemented after tragic events like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, which led to the deaths of 146 employees of the factory due to chained doors preventing the workers getting out.  The eight hour work day came at the expense of many lives, notably after the Chicago Haymarket Square Massacre in 1886.  I have also studied Latin American history and, last semester, was able to take Professor Stoner's class on the subject.  I also previously took a course on Spain, and my Spanish classes dealt with projects connected to Hispanic culture.  I have studied religion as well and, last semester, took a class on Religion in America.  I have studied the history of the LGBT movement in my personal time and also plan to continue pursuing that history.  It's especially frustrating to witness old arguments for miscegenation recycled as arguments against gay rights.  If people don't understand their rights, and what happened to give them those rights, they risk losing them.
